"We are excited to host the Camp Fair this year," stated David Miller, owner of NYMetroParents, which publishes several parenting magazines including Westchester Parent, Rockland Parent, Fairfield Parent, Big Apple Parent, Nassau Parent, Suffolk Parent, Brooklyn Parent, and Queens Parent. "To assist in the complex search to find the right camp, we have also created an online tool to help parents review and select a camp for their child or children athttp://www.westchestercampfair.com," he added.

The Camp Fair, the oldest and largest in the tri-state area, is expected to draw over 500 parents this year. There is no charge for admission but those interested can obtain more information or register on line athttp://www.westchestercampfair.com . Those who register in advance will be eligible to win an iPod. For more information call (914) 397-0200.

According to the American Camp Association (ACA) more than 12,000 day and sleep away camps exist in the U.S.; about 40% of those are day camps, a number which has grown by nearly 90% of the over past 20 years. Each year more than 11 million children and adults attend camp. In the past 10 years there has been an increase in the use of international staff to expose campers to different cultures.

In terms of programming 88% of ACA-accredited camps offer swimming, 48% offer horseback riding, 22% offer wilderness programs, 12% travel/tour programs, 57% teambuilding, and 21% community service. The newest program additions in recent years are challenging and adventurous activities, including high and low ropes courses, climbing walls, zip lines, backpacking, mountain biking, and cave exploring. In an ACA survey, over half of the camps reported having community service or good deed programs incorporated into their programs including community clean-ups, food drives, recycling programs, and volunteering with senior citizens and hospital patients.

According to the ACA, parents cite the following as the most important reasons for sending their children to camp: camp helps build self-confidence and self-esteem; camp is a safe environment; camp is a place to build social skills and make friends and ACA's opinion research shows that parents see fun and safety as most important to the camp experience.

A portion of the proceeds of this Camp Fair will be contributed the Elana Hadassah White Plains Chapter. The Camp Fair, hosted by NYMetroParents owned by Davler Media Group, will be held on Sunday, February 5th from noon until 3, there is no charge for admission but those interested can get more information or register on line athttp://www.westchestercampfair.com . magazines are Launched in Metropolitan NYC
Davler Media Group’s Newest Hyper Local Media

October 13, 2011—Davler Media Group, one of New York City’s leading local media companies, just launched its newest print title, Special Parent.  Published semi-annually (October and April) in three regional zones, New York City, Westchester/Rockland/Fairfield, and Long Island, these controlled circulation magazines offer parents of children with special needs a resource that includes articles, directories, calendar of events, guide to local parent support groups, and a breadth of advertising from local businesses serving this market segment. Each edition has a print run of 35,000 copies and will be distributed similar to Davler’s 400,000 monthly copies of NYMetroParents local parenting magazines.  Copies will be bulk-dropped at over 500 schools, professional offices, educational centers, after-school programs and at events dedicated to these parents. The magazines are complemented by a dedicated website, www.nyspecialparent.com.

David L. Miller, CEO of Davler Media Group, said, “These very targeted media are consistent with our mission.  We are offering this market segment comprehensive vehicles that serve parents at the time when they seek information about making decisions about how to best help and support their children.  The advertisers in our publications and on our websites know that they have readers’ undivided attention when they are engaged in our media.  We are expanding into the special needs market because we have heard from both clients and parents that there is not an effective resource in the New York City market to bring them together.”

Dawn Roode, Editorial Director of the NYMetroParents division, explains the approach the company has taken to provide a premium product to the parents we are trying to reach: “In speaking to so many individuals, including experts in various special needs fields as well myriad parents, it became apparent that most people were craving the same types of things—concise, comprehensive resources, in one place, that they could tap to help their children; helpful, actionable advice and guidance from experts on practical matters specific to their families—such as toilet-training a child with autism or other developmental delays, or how to deal with oppositional behavior, for example; and above all, hope , inspiration, and a feeling of connectedness to other parents and children going through similar experiences as them. More than anything, it is conveying that positivity and sense of community that I hope we have succeeded in.”

Davler Media Group Further Diversifies with Events

Last week, Davler also further diversified its portfolio of properties by acquiring selected assets of Celebrate Showcases LLC, managers of Celebrity Party Showcases.  The Company is going to partner with the current Celebrate owners to co-host the three Showcases scheduled for Fall 2011 and Winter 2012.  These expos bring together many party service professionals, DJs, photographers, venues, invitation printers, florists and other suppliers with parents planning Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, Sweet Sixteen parties, and Quinceñeras.  The Showcase has a similar geographic targeting, one each in Northern NJ, Westchester, and Fairfield.

Miller said, “These are great events that have been helping parents for 20 years and have a phenomenal reputation in the marketplace.  We have spoken to many exhibitors and parents who said this is a very efficient way to meet the others.  We have also recently reached an agreement to manage the 30th Annual Westchester Camp Fair.  As many publishers know, events effectively complement the print and digital media to give business multiple ways to reach their targeted market.  “We are excited to be able to broaden the vehicles that we can offer our clients,” says Miller, “to reach consumers at the time when they are making purchase decisions.”

NYMetroParents Wins 10 Parenting Publications of America Awards

NEW YORK, NY (March 7, 2011) NYMetroParents, Davler Media Group's parenting division, took home ten awards at the 2011 annual Parenting Publications of America awards competition held in Arlington, VA last night. NYMetroParents publishes eight local magazines serving the New York Metropolitan area including Big Apple Parent, Brooklyn Parent, Fairfield Parent,Nassau Parent, Queens Parent, Rockland Parent, Suffolk Parent, Westchester Parent as well as www.nymetroparents.com.

PPA's Editorial and Design Awards Competition recognizes excellence in journalism, photography and design achieved by publishers, editors, writers and designers at member publications. Prof. Daryl Moen of the University of Missouri's School of Journalism coordinated the annual contest. A panel of 25 judges reviewed 915 entries from 75 publications to choose the winners in each category.

"The purpose of the PPA awards competition is to encourage a high level of journalistic performance and service to communities by recognizing editorial excellence and outstanding visual presentation in parenting publications," said PPA Executive Director C. James Dowden.

David L. Miller, publisher of NYMetroParents expressed, “We are thrilled to have won 10 awards at PPA – a new record for us!  This affirms our position as the strongest editorial and publishing team in the metropolitan NY area, and illustrates leadership among all parenting publications across the country.

Below are the winning entries accompanied by judges' comments:

EDITORIAL:

GOLD. Column: Reviews
Griffin Miller, Writer; Dawn Roode, Editorial Director, Christine Tarulli, Deputy Managing Editor, Phyllis Singer, Editorial Director

Lusciously written theater reviews offer readers a unique sneak peek at Broadway's latest offerings, ones that include a kid's perspective. Children will experience plays differently than parents, and these authoritatively written reviews recognize the importance of that distinction.

GOLD. Column: Family Matters
Big Apple Parent, “Health,” Danielle Sullivan, Writer; Phyllis Singer, Editorial Director; Christine Tarulli, Deputy Managing Editor

The column on hand sanitizers was informative, not just for parents, but for everyone. There are a lot of myths about sanitizers, and this column provides useful information. The column on mothers suffering from postpartum thyroiditis provided new information that mothers and mothers-to-be will find very useful. Both were very well written.

SILVER. Special Section: Back to School
Dawn Roode, Editorial Director, Julie Revelant, Deputy Editor, Christine Tarulli, Deputy Managing Editor; Kaitlin Ahern and Rachel Brodsky, Editors

Back to school sections can be a chore, but this section offers solid story ideas from schoolyard etiquette, to fashion, to how school lunches are changing. Resource lists are a great addition.

SILVER. Headlines
Dawn Roode, Editorial Director; Christine Tarulli, Deputy Managing Editor; Julie Revelant, Deputy Editor; Kaitlin Ahern, Editor

Westchester Parent offers readers layers of headlines to invite them into the stories. And it earns kudos for not falling into the trap of overly strained puns or trite sayings for its headlines. For example, on a story about cakes for kids' parties, the editors wisely stayed away from "Let them eat cake" and opted for "Cake for All."

BRONZE.  Big Apple Parent - Calendar of Events
Kaitlin Ahern, Calendar Editor; Adriana Burgi, Copy Editor; Christine Tarulli, Deputy Managing Editor; Dawn Roode, Editorial Director

An age code for all ages sets apart the Big Apple Parent's calendar. It also offers a free weekly newsletter, certainly a value-added idea. Its listing are well organized with lots of cross-referencing for events occurring on multiple days. Terrific, useful content.

BRONZE. Column: Child Development & Parenting Issues
"Special Needs," Amber Greviskes, Writer; Dawn Roode, Editorial Director; Christine Tarulli, Deputy Managing Editor

The use of real-life sources in this column helps parents understand that they are not alone in confronting the challenges of raising special-needs children.

BRONZE. Special Section: Birthday Parties
Dawn Roode, Editorial Director, Christine Tarulli, Deputy Managing Editor, Julie Revelant, Deputy Editor, Kaitlin Ahern, Rachel Brodsky, Editors

A clever idea for a section that can be copied by other magazines. Besides good advertising matchups, this section also offers great stories, like how to choose a birthday cake for kids who may have allergies.

DESIGN:

Sweeping the largest circulation parenting magazine cover category with all three Design awards, placements were as follows:

GOLD. June 2010
Mayra Aguilar, Creative Director; Christine Tarulli, Deputy Managing Editor; Phyllis Singer, Editorial Director

Sticking with a format that works, a big smile in a fun setting is a winning combination. Nothing says summer fun like a joyful day at the beach.

SILVER. August 2010
Mayra Aguilar, Creative Director; Christine Tarulli, Deputy Managing Editor; Phyllis Singer, Editorial Director

Big play of a fun-loving youngster can't help but draw the reader to the magazine. Those eyes and smile are natural magnets. The colors on the page are equally playful.

BRONZE. February 2010
Mayra Aguilar, Creative Director; Christine Tarulli, Deputy Managing Editor; Phyllis Singer, Editorial Director

The large format focused on a smiling face helps sell this cover. The color coordination between photograph and typography is excellent.
