NYMetroParents Receives 15 Excellence Awards from Parenting Media Association
New York, NY (March 9, 2013) – On March 9, Parenting Media Association presented NYMetroParents, a division of Davler Media Group and the largest publisher of regional parenting publications on the East Coast, with 15 excellence awards at its 2012 Editorial and Design Awards Competitionbanquet, held in Atlanta, GA.
With 15 total accolades, NYMetroParents has once again broken its own record for number of awards received: The publishing group took home 11 excellence awards at last year’s banquet and 10 awards for the year 2010.
NYMetroParents includes monthly titles Big Apple Parent, Brooklyn Parent, Fairfield Parent, Long Island Parent – Nassau edition, Long Island Parent – Suffolk edition, Queens Parent, Rockland Parent, Suffolk Parent, Westchester Parent, and the biannual ancillary publication NYMetro Special Parent.
Parenting Media Association is a national trade association of regional parenting publications. PMA's annual Editorial and Design Awards Competition recognizes excellence in journalism, photography, and design achieved by publishers, editors, writers, and designers at parenting newspapers and magazines throughout the U.S., Canada, and Australia.
According to Daryl Moen, a professor at the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism and the coordinator of the awards, the contest was more competitive this year due to the elimination of 17 categories. "The elimination contributed to a drop of about 70 entries overall from last year, but the remaining categories are more competitive," Moen said.
The competition received 745 total entries across 18 Editorial categories, 11 Design categories, four Ancillary Publications categories, three Digital Media categories, and three General Excellence categories reflecting editorial and design. Open to all member publications, the competition was broken into three circulation divisions: 25,000 or fewer, 25,001 to 44,999, and 45,000 or more. The entries were reviewed by a panel of 26 judges. NYMetroParents was named a finalist in 21 categories.
In the most competitive category, Service Feature, NYMetroParents took home the Gold award for "Talking Politics" by Deputy Editor Kaitlin Ahern. According to the judges' comments, "'Talking Politics' centers on a refreshing topic addressed with a writing style that encourages parents not to talk down to their kids or ignore such an important event as an election. The subhead 'Party Training' in a parents magazine is award-worthy alone. The article combines quick-paced advice on how to bring attention to public service and politics and connect it to children's lives."
As in many years past, NYMetroParents was recognized for its superb calendar section, which features a comprehensive selection of low-cost, family-friendly events in the New York City area. This year, Rockland Parent (edited by Alison Reiser) took the Silver award in the Editorial category for Calendar of Events, and Fairfield Parent (edited by Karen Demeter) took the Gold award in the corresponding Design category.
"I am so very proud of our edit and design team for their dedication to providing excellent, valuable content to parents in our area every month," said Dawn Roode, editorial director of NYMetroParents. "Every individual contributes in an important way, and each deserves congratulations on these awards. It is most gratifying to know that the recognition comes from the independent judges at the University of Missouri, who under Daryl Moen's leadership also coordinate three other national contests for professional journalism organizations."
"Winning awards in the Editorial, Design, and Digital categories demonstrates our continued commitment to producing high-quality media that serves both our readers and our clients," says David L. Miller, CEO of Davler Media Group.

NYMetroParents Receives 11 Excellence Awards from Parenting Media Association
NEW YORK, NY (March 5, 2012)—Parenting Media Association presented NYMetroParents, a division of Davler Media Group and the largest publisher of regional parenting publications on the East Coast, with 11 Excellence Awards at the 2011 Editorial and Design Awards Competition banquet on March 3 in San Antonio, TX. These 11 accolades set a record high for NYMetroParents and serve as proof of its continued dedication to excellence; the publishing group took home 10 awards at last year’s PMA banquet.
NYMetroParents includes monthly titles Big Apple Parent, Brooklyn Parent, Fairfield Parent, Nassau Parent, Queens Parent, Rockland Parent, Suffolk Parent, Westchester Parent, and the biannual ancillary publication NYMetro Special Parent.
Parenting Media Association (formerly Parenting Publications of America) is a national trade association of regional parenting publications. PMA’s Editorial and Design Awards Competition recognizes excellence in journalism, photography, and design achieved by publishers, editors, writers, and designers at parenting newspapers and magazines throughout the U.S., Canada, and Australia.
A panel of 22 independent judges, who drew upon significant professional experience, reviewed entries to choose the winners in each category. “The quality of the entries continues to rise,” noted Prof. Daryl Moen of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, who coordinates the competition. “Some of the design categories, including feature and publication design, are magnificent. In writing, there are dozens of writing entries, particularly in the column categories, that are outstanding, and the competition is stiff.”
“The purpose of the PMA awards competition is to encourage a high level of journalistic performance and service to communities by recognizing editorial excellence and outstanding visual presentation in parenting publications,” said PMA Executive Director C. James Dowden.
This year, more than 840 entries were reviewed by a panel of 22 judges, and PMA changed from a bronze-silver-gold awards system to finalists with one winner in each category (except General Excellence, which retained the three-part awards system).
“I am so very proud of our edit and design team for their dedication to providing excellent, valuable content to parents in our area every month,” said Dawn Roode, editorial director of NYMetroParents. “Every individual contributes in an important way, and each deserves congratulations on these awards. It is most gratifying to know that the recognition comes from the independent judges at the University of Missouri, who under Daryl Moen’s leadership also coordinates three other national contests for professional journalism organizations.”
According to David Miller, CEO of Davler Media Group, “The awards are testament to our ongoing commitment to print. We strive to provide the best and most comprehensive array of resources for local parents throughout the greater New York metro area, and our publications are a proven source for that material. Winning these awards—and the fact that we were recognized even more than last year—is an impressive accomplishment.”
Added Roode: “It might be easy to overlook, but our team was not only recognized with 11 awards, but we were named finalists in 12 other categories. That is an unprecedented achievement for us, and I couldn’t be more proud.”
The PMA Awards
Open to all member publications, the competition was broken into three circulation divisions: 30,000 or fewer, 30,001 to 54,999, and 55,000 or more. Members competed to win in 20 editorial categories, 17 design categories, four ancillary publication categories, two website categories, and five general excellence categories.
At the conference, NYMetroParents received 11 PMA awards for editorial and design excellence in the 55,000 or more circulation division, including:

According to the American Camp Association (ACA) more than 12,000 day and sleep away camps exist in the U.S.; about 40% of those are day camps, a number which has grown by nearly 90% of the over past 20 years. Each year more than 11 million children and adults attend camp. In the past 10 years there has been an increase in the use of international staff to expose campers to different cultures.
In terms of programming 88% of ACA-accredited camps offer swimming, 48% offer horseback riding, 22% offer wilderness programs, 12% travel/tour programs, 57% teambuilding, and 21% community service. The newest program additions in recent years are challenging and adventurous activities, including high and low ropes courses, climbing walls, zip lines, backpacking, mountain biking, and cave exploring. In an ACA survey, over half of the camps reported having community service or good deed programs incorporated into their programs including community clean-ups, food drives, recycling programs, and volunteering with senior citizens and hospital patients.
According to the ACA, parents cite the following as the most important reasons for sending their children to camp: camp helps build self-confidence and self-esteem; camp is a safe environment; camp is a place to build social skills and make friends and ACA's opinion research shows that parents see fun and safety as most important to the camp experience.

Copies will be bulk-dropped at over 500 schools, professional offices, educational centers, after-school programs and at events dedicated to these parents. The magazines are complemented by a dedicated website, www.nyspecialparent.com.
David L. Miller, CEO of Davler Media Group, said, “These very targeted media are consistent with our mission. We are offering this market segment comprehensive vehicles that serve parents at the time when they seek information about making decisions about how to best help and support their children. The advertisers in our publications and on our websites know that they have readers’ undivided attention when they are engaged in our media. We are expanding into the special needs market because we have heard from both clients and parents that there is not an effective resource in the New York City market to bring them together.”
Dawn Roode, Editorial Director of the NYMetroParents division, explains the approach the company has taken to provide a premium product to the parents we are trying to reach: “In speaking to so many individuals, including experts in various special needs fields as well myriad parents, it became apparent that most people were craving the same types of things—concise, comprehensive resources, in one place, that they could tap to help their children; helpful, actionable advice and guidance from experts on practical matters specific to their families—such as toilet-training a child with autism or other developmental delays, or how to deal with oppositional behavior, for example; and above all, hope , inspiration, and a feeling of connectedness to other parents and children going through similar experiences as them. More than anything, it is conveying that positivity and sense of community that I hope we have succeeded in.”
Davler Media Group Further Diversifies with Events
Last week, Davler also further diversified its portfolio of properties by acquiring selected assets of Celebrate Showcases LLC, managers of Celebrity Party Showcases. The Company is going to partner with the current Celebrate owners to co-host the three Showcases scheduled for Fall 2011 and Winter 2012. These expos bring together many party service professionals, DJs, photographers, venues, invitation printers, florists and other suppliers with parents planning Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, Sweet Sixteen parties, and Quinceñeras. The Showcase has a similar geographic targeting, one each in Northern NJ, Westchester, and Fairfield.
Miller said, “These are great events that have been helping parents for 20 years and have a phenomenal reputation in the marketplace. We have spoken to many exhibitors and parents who said this is a very efficient way to meet the others. We have also recently reached an agreement to manage the 30th Annual Westchester Camp Fair. As many publishers know, events effectively complement the print and digital media to give business multiple ways to reach their targeted market. “We are excited to be able to broaden the vehicles that we can offer our clients,” says Miller, “to reach consumers at the time when they are making purchase decisions.”

2011 Concierge Choice Award Winners Announced in New York City
NEW YORK, NY (September 27, 2011) On September 26, 2011, the New York City Association of Hotel Concierges (NYCAHC) announced the winners of the fifth annual Concierge Choice Awards during a black-tie event at the Pierre Hotel on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
The tourism industry, one of New York City’s most vibrant economic sectors, honored many of the city’s leading venues, recognizing institutions and individuals who had produced superior visitor experiences over the last year. NYCAHC established the prestigious Concierge Choice Awards in 2007 to recognize the city’s elite in the tourist, theater, restaurant, retail, service, and transportation industries. Based on the feedback that the concierges receive from their guests throughout the year, they nominate and then select the crème de la crème in 16 categories.
Dominic Alfonzetti, President of the NYC Association of Hotel Concierges and Chef Concierge at the InterContinental New York Barclay, said in his remarks, “Our industry is on track to meet Mayor Bloomberg’s goal of 50 million visitors in 2012. It is the nominees and winners of the Concierge Choice Awards who give guests a superior experience that they will share with their friends back home.”
Davler Media Group, publisher of City Guide and Promenade magazines, hosted the awards dinner. The Co-Masters of Ceremonies included respected concierges Peter Johnson of the Kimberly Hotel and McKinley Winston of the St. Regis Hotel. They presented awards to the businesses and individuals representing the best in NYC hospitality. Below are the list of categories and winners.
- Tourist Transportation – Helicopter Flight Services
- Private Tour Service – Signature Tours
