New Interviews in the UK Daily Mail and the London Times!</font></span>
<font face=verdana size=-1>

<p>Michael emailed us on Saturday, giving us a 'heads up' about two articles in the UK press - Saturday's London Times and Sunday's Daily Mail. He said they "are really good", and he's right!
<p>
<a href="http://www.timesplus.co.uk/tto/news/?login=false&url=http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/arts/stage/theatre/article2874119.ece">Click Here to Read the London Times</a> (which is behind a paywall, but the £1 is worth it!)

<a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1347273/Michael-Crawford-long-awaited-return-stage.html#ixzz1B90wlQV5">Click Here to Read the UK Daily Mail</a>
<p>
Here's a brief excerpt from the Times:

"And now Lloyd Webber had come calling again. A quarter of a century after changing Crawford's life by casting him as The Phantom of the Opera, he was offering him a supporting role. In a revival. But then again, oh my gosh, what an exciting revival. What's more, Lloyd Webber promised him that he would be tweaking the opening and the ending and adding four new songs that he had written with Tim Rice - including one for each witch and one for the Wizard. It would be a new proposition. Still, Crawford asked for time to make up his mind. He had just started a summer holiday that would involve six weeks of travelling around Europe before meeting his grandchildren in Sicily. He spent the whole time dwelling on all things Oz.
<p>
He downloaded the books on to his computer and watched the film. He thought about how he might play the part, which also includes playing the Wizard's Kansas correlative, Professor Marvel, and several fanciful guises that the Wizard adopts - and whose voices Crawford slides in and out of as he talks about them. He thought about the ways in which the Oz characters are all aspects of the Kansas characters, the way the film suggests that "home is where the heart and soul is, where true love comes from". And then he spent ten days with his grandchildren, aged 13 and 11.
<p>

"It was the longest I'd spent with them," he says. "I bonded with them. And they said they'd never seen me work. They'd seen Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em on the DVD, they'd seen the TV version ofBarnum, they had seen the clips of Hello, Dolly! that Pixar used inWALL·E - Oh, I got enormous street cred for that! - but not much else." So he made up his mind. He would do it."

<p>Michael Crawford is to star as The Wizard in ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER's new production of THE WIZARD OF OZ.</p>
<p>Michael, internationally renowned for originating the title role in The Phantom of the Opera and loved by millions for his role as the hapless Frank Spencer in the classic British sitcom, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, will star alongside DANIELLE HOPE, the winner of the BBC's smash hit Over The Rainbow, when the show opens at the LONDON PALLADIUM next year.</p>
<p>Danielle captured the hearts of the country and will now step into the ruby slippers of Dorothy, the role immortalised by Judy Garland.</p>
<p>They will be joined by Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion and Dorothy's little dog Toto - as the most magical adventure of all comesto the West End. With brand new songs by ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER and TIM RICE, The Wizard of Oz previews from Monday 7th February 2011 (Press Night: Tuesday 1st March at 7pm).</p>
<p>An eagerly anticipated new addition to London's West End, The Wizard of Oz promises to be the biggest theatre event of the year. Developed from the ever-popular 1939 MGM screenplay, The Wizard of Oz is an enchanting adaptation of the all-time classic, totally reconceived for the stage by the award-winning creative team who delighted audiences of all ages with their recent London Palladium revival of The Sound of Music.</p>
<p>This new production,produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Bill Kenwright,contains all the much-loved songs from the Oscar-winning movie score including; Over the Rainbow, Follow the Yellow Brick Road, If I Only Had a Heart and We're Off to See the Wizard. All the favourite characters and iconic scenes are there, plus a few surprises along the way - not just "lions and tigers and bears" but some new songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice adding extra colour to the story as it moves from film to stage, as well as marking the first time they have worked together in over 30 years on a new production. Audiences will be captivated as The London Palladium is transformed into the mythical Emerald City with breathtaking special effects and scenery to bring to life the real story of Oz.<br /> <br />The London Palladium, arguably the world's most famous theatre and this year celebrating its 100th birthday, is a great favourite with performers and audiences alike and has a very rich entertainment history presenting variety, pantomime and spectacular family musicals. Just one aspect of the elaborate stage design for The Wizard of Oz will be a restoration of the legendary revolving stage which everyone remembers from the finale of Television's Sunday Night at the London Palladium.</p>
<p>Andrew Lloyd Webber said, "We will be going a lot further than simply presenting the movie on stage. We have re-visited the original novel and re-conceived our "Oz" as a piece of new musical theatre using the wonderful Arlen/Harburg songs and adding a few new ones where there are gaps. I am really looking forward to bringing The Wizard of Oz to life on stage.I am delighted that Michael Crawford, a legend of musical theatre, will take on the role of the Wizard and can't wait to work with him once more".</p>
<p>Michael Crawford said, "I didn't hesitate at all when Andrew asked me to take on the role of the Wizard. Working with him and Tim on a brand new production of this timeless classic is so thrilling and I am already looking forward to starting rehearsals later in the year."</p>
<p>Michael Crawford's hugely successful career spans four decades, and includes his unforgettable performance in the hit show Barnum at the London Palladium, and the role of Count Fosco in Andrew Lloyd Webber'sThe Woman in White. He is a multi Olivier and Tony-award winning star whose acclaim encompasses theatre, television and film and he was appointed an OBE in 1988.</p>
<p>The Wizard of Ozby L Frank Baum is directed by Jeremy Sams, choreographed by Arlene Phillips, music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E Y Harburg, with additional music and lyrics by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice with the set and costumes designed by Rob Jones.</p>
<p>Tickets are available from The London Palladium Box Office on 0844 412 2957 or online from <a href="http://www.wizardofozthemusical.com">www.wizardofozthemusical.com</a></p>

M.C.I.F.A. friends and to support the charity work that was central to Michael's authorization of the organization in 1991. The weekend included a trip to the famous Getty Center and a private architectural tour. <p></p>
Saturday, August 2nd, was a milestone in M.C.I.F.A. history. We hosted our very first live web cast - a private chat with Michael for members only! Michael spent over an hour answering questions sent in by members, and was his usual hilarious, and sometimes philosophical, self. He spoke of his career plans, his family, his "life philosophy" and ended with answers to the 10 questions from "Inside Actors Studio" that gave real insight into him.
<p></p>
The chat was available on the web site in the Member Only section for members to review and replay for 48 hours and is now available to members as a DVD. The DVD includes behind-the-scenes shots, as well as footage of Michael with the winners of the charity drawing who spent the afternoon at lunch and boating with him. <p>
Michael announced to M.C.I.F.A. members that he is in the early planning stages of a new PBS special and concert tour, hopefully for 2008, though the timing is uncertain. Based on enthusiastic audience response in Long Beach and Lake Tahoe to the new songs and video bits he had added to the concert, he will be creating a brand new show, centered around this and other biographical material.
 <p>
In Long Beach, he 'premiered' a new version of "It Only Takes a Moment" (from "Hello, Dolly!), orchestrated by Larry Blank and accompanied by a background of images from the movie, which generated an audible "Oh, my gosh - I didn't know that was HIM!" reaction from the audiences at both Long Beach and Tahoe. At the the end of the concerts, prior to his "Papa" encore, he added a lovely rendition of "Other Pleasures" which he dedicated to his daughters, Emma & Lucy. Images of the girls growing up, taken from his private family albums, were projected behind him, and the audience reaction was overwhelmingly appreciative, with wave after wave of applause reaching the stage.

On May 10th, Michael informed members of the M.C.I.F.A. of the sad news that Ian Adam, his very dear friend and vocal coach for so many decades, had passed away earlier in the day. At the Member Only event in Cerritos, California last August, members were touched by the story Michael related to them of the first time he ever sang for Ian - in what Michael described as a hesitant, small voice - and Ian looking up at him with tears in his eyes saying, "My dear boy, you have a wonderful gift." Ian Adam, with his own great gift, guided Michael Crawford in developing one of the most remarkable vocal talents of his generation, one that has touched millions of lives around the world. Well done, Ian.
